Yes. Provided all the lens care and hygiene instructions are followed, the risk of infection is very low. They have been deemed safer than normal contact lenses due to the reduced amount of time the contact lenses spend on the eyes. While most contact lens wearers spend an average of 12-16 hours a day in lenses, Ortho-K lenses are only worn for about 6-8 hours during sleep. The Ortho-K lenses used at our clinics allow very high oxygen transmissibility and are also FDA approved for night wear.

Vision improvement starts immediately.  Some patients see clearly in as little as one night of wearing Ortho-K lenses. After the first night, most get a couple of hours of clear vision. After the second night, one may get 4 hours of clear vision. Vision is normally good during all waking hours within the first to second week of wear. In some patients with higher prescriptions, it may take a month before clear vision can be maintained for all waking hours.

No. Ortho-K results are not permanent and completely reversible. However, the longer you wear the Ortho-K lenses, the longer the cornea will retain its new shape before it reverts to its original shape. The same way a ring would make an indent on your finger. The longer you’ve worn the ring, the longer it will take for the indent to disappear. After a couple of years of wearing Ortho-K lenses, some have reported being able to see clearly for two or three days without wearing the lenses the nights before.

Laser surgery removes part of your cornea. The higher your prescription, the more cornea and corneal nerves are ablated. Those who have received laser surgery also report experiencing dry eyes. In addition, the prescription can still change after laser surgery. Retreatment with laser surgery is possible but limited in success.

Ortho-K does not ablate or remove any corneal tissues. It simply moves the cells and corneal nerves around. It does not cause dry eyes. On the contrary, it will help relieve dry eye symptoms that you would get with regular contact lens wear. Ortho-K is also ideal to stabilise the prescription of children who are not eligible for laser surgery.

Initially, they will feel a bit uncomfortable if you’re not used to putting things into your eyes. However, Ortho-K does not and should not hurt. The eyes will eventually desensitise to the lenses and after a few months of wear, some wearers may not feel the lenses on their eyes.

Mishandling the lenses may scratch or chip the lens, which can cause pain and discomfort. You should be monitored regularly by your optometrist and handle the lens as instructed by them to ensure the lenses remain in good condition.

Yes. Dry eye sufferers usually find soft contact lens wear uncomfortable towards the end of the day. With Ortho-K lenses, it is worn during sleep, therefore relieving dryness during the day from soft contact lens use.  Sufferers of severe dry eyes may need intense dry eye treatment prior to commencing Ortho-K.

As mentioned before, Ortho-K is fully reversible. You can stop wearing the lenses whenever you want and the eyesight will return to the script it was prior to Ortho-K lens wear.

Yes, Ortho-K is fully reversible. Should you decide to do laser surgery, simply stop wearing the lenses for at least a couple of weeks upon consulting your optometrist for a laser assessment.

Ortho-K lenses come in many parameters and powers. If you are not seeing as good as you used to, or your optometrist finds a change in your prescription, they will change the parameters or power of the Ortho-K lens as needed.

Ortho-K has been shown to slow down the progression of short-sightedness. If your child has to change his glasses every year, Ortho-K may be more economical with the added benefit of slowing down the progression of short-sightedness.

It doesn’t matter when you sleep with the Ortho-K lenses as long as you get a minimum of 6 hours of sleep with the lenses. It is ideal that for the first month of wear that you at least get 8 hours of sleep wearing the lenses. The more days you wear the lens, the less hours you will need to sleep with them to achieve the treatment.

Ortho-K lenses need to be cleaned daily with the recommended solutions and cleaned fortnightly with a special protein cleaner to keep it lasting longer.

The lens my warp, have some scratches, and have protein buildup in the curve junctions over time causing blurriness and less than ideal treatment. For the best and safest results, they are recommended to be replaced every year.
